Storyline 360 E-Learning Heroes Challenge: Accordion Interactions

Overview

This accordion interaction was used to present learning objectives for a prototype e-learning course designed to onboard and refresh new and tenured law enforcement instructors on the safety protocols required during scenario-based training.

Purpose

I created this accordion interaction as part of an E-Learning Heroes community challenge. The purpose of these community challenges is to provide a platform for e-learning professionals to practice and develop their skills by participating in weekly mini-projects focused on different e-learning design elements, allowing them to build their portfolio, learn new techniques, and connect with other professionals in the community while showcasing their creativity through interactive challenges.

My role at a glance:

  • Designed visually engaging and interactive accordion interactions in Storyline 360.

  • Developed and customized base layers and individual content layers to ensure seamless functionality.

  • Programmed triggers and animations to enhance user experience and ensure interactivity.

  • Conducted rigorous testing to identify and resolve functionality issues.

  • Ensured alignment with instructional goals and overall course design.

Process & Tools

To create an accordion interaction in Storyline 360, I started by designing the visual layout. I used the Slide Master to ensure a clean and consistent design, creating a base layer that included the accordion headers and placeholders for content. Next, I added individual layers for each accordion section, placing the detailed content on the corresponding layer.

Using triggers, I programed each header to show its associated layer when clicked and to hide any currently visible layers. This ensured only one accordion section is open at a time. I used motion effects sparingly, such as subtle transitions, to enhance the interaction while keeping it user-friendly. Finally, I tested the interaction extensively to confirm all triggers functioned correctly and the user experience was smooth and intuitive. Once satisfied, I integrated the interaction into the broader project, ensuring it aligned with the overall design and instructional goals.
