Safe Training Procedures

E-Learning Course Prototype

Safe Training Procedures Course on a laptop screen.

Overview

This course is a prototype for an e-learning course designed to onboard and refresh new and tenured law enforcement instructors on the safety protocols required during scenario-based training.

Purpose

The Safe Training Procedures course was designed to address an increase in the number of safety violations during scenario-based training. The course was designed for new and veteran instructors within the Training Division of a large metropolitan police agency.

My Role At A Glance:

  • Conducted needs, learner, and procedural task analysis

  • Created course flowchart

  • Developed storyboard

  • Designed interactive learning activities, demonstration videos, knowledge checks, and assessments

  • Served as SME and project manager

Process & Tools

Utilizing the ADDIE model, I began by conducting a thorough analysis to identify learner needs and define the course objectives. I held meetings with subject matter experts (SMEs) and key stakeholders, compiling data for a needs and learner analysis. In the design and development phases, I created a detailed course outline, flowchart, and storyboard using PowerPoint, incorporating multimedia elements, interactive learning activities, demonstration videos, knowledge checks, and a summative assessment.

I used Storyline 360 and Rise 360 to develop the course materials and collaborated with the video production team to integrate the course into the agency’s LMS. The course was implemented for a pilot group of instructors, and during the evaluation phase, I collected learner feedback and performance data to make necessary revisions and improvements.

Tools: Storyline 360, Rise 360, PowerPoint

Outcome

I presented the course prototype to management and gained approval to move forward on the design and implementation of the complete learning experience.

Due to proprietary information contained within this project, I am unable to share the entire course publicly. However, I am happy to provide a detailed overview and discuss specific elements of the project upon request. A course design and development snapshot is included below.

Course Design & Development Snapshot

A flowchart is a visual representation of a course’s structure and sequence. I created a flowchart to map out the structure and sequence of the Safe Training Procedures course, ensuring a clear and logical progression of content, learning activities, and assessments.

A storyboard is a detailed visual outline that maps out the content, design, and flow of an e-learning course. I used my storyboard to plan and organize multimedia elements, learning activities, knowledge checks, assessments, narration, on-screen text, course navigation, and interactivity.

I created an accordion interaction to define the course learning objectives.

I utilized Storyline’s marker interaction to provide learners the opportunity to identify the items prohibited from entering the safe training area.

The course includes pre- and post-assessments, learning activities, and knowledge checks. I utilized Storyline 360 to build a variety of interactions for each question, including multiple choice, true/false, pick one/many, drag -and-drop, short answer, text-entry, and branching scenarios.

I developed and embed video demonstrations of the safe training protocols and signaled key concepts and principles throughout the course.

I concluded each section with an interactive key concepts review.
