Thrive & Protect: Prioritizing Health & Wellness In Policing
Overview
This course addresses the physical and mental health challenges faced by police officers, offering a holistic approach to wellness through practical, engaging, and community-based training.
Purpose
This course is designed to equips officers with actionable strategies to optimize their health and effectively manage stress. Comprised of four modules focusing on Fitness, Nutrition, Sleep, and Resiliency, officers will be able to proactively manage their physical and mental health, integrate sustainable wellness practices into daily life, and improve overall wellbeing.
Process & Tools
For Module 1, I designed accessible content in Canvas, incorporating Universal Design principles for all content. I organized the module into digestible chunks, staring with an overview and required resources in various formats (articles, podcasts, videos) to cater to diverse learning preferences. Key presentations include an interactive VR exhibition on the five components of physical fitness and a microlearning video on nutrition, both with accompanying accessible transcripts. I developed an interacting learning game, FitQuest, and a reflective discussion question on self-efficacy to engage learners and provide opportunities to apply the knowledge and skills gained from the module. The module concludes with a summary reinforcing the learning outcomes and encouraging continued application.

Module 1 Outline
Presentation 1.1 is an immersive virtual reality experience I designed using Artsteps and Eleven Labs AI Voice Generator. It is in the form of an interactive, 3-D art exhibition focusing on the five components of physical fitness and how they contribute to performance and overall wellness.
Presentation 1.2 is a microlearning video I created using Adobe Character Creator and Eleven Labs AI Voice Generator. The video focuses on the fundamentals of nutrition and introduces five actionable practices that can be incorporated into learners’ daily routine.
Learning Activity 1.1 is an interactive learning game I created using Genially. In the game, learners to dive deeper into the topic of body composition by progressing through three levels. Throughout the game, learners get to apply the knowledge and skills gained at each level to earn badges and progress to becoming the FitQuest Champion.
Using Rise 360, I designed microlearning modules to cater to busy learners, delivering content in small manageable chunks. This approach improves retention and allows learners to engage with the material at their own pace.
The course content emphasizes practical, relevant, and easy to implement strategies that align with the diverse needs and lifestyles of learners.
I utilized interactive content and tools, such as accordion and tab interactions, videos, podcasts, and webpages, to encourage active engagement with the material. These engagement strategies promote deeper understanding, adds elements of fun to the learning process, and boost retention and transfer of learning.
I designed the content within my module to be accessible to all learners, regardless of ability. I incorporated alternative text for images, ensured all videos and audio content had captions and transcripts. All selected media content includes accessible transcripts, closed captioning, and alternative text.
I applied the principles of Universal Design throughout the course, offering content in various formats like videos, articles, and podcasts, providing interactive elements like VR exhibitions and games, and allowing learners to demonstrate understanding through diverse assessments such as written reflections, video submissions, and interactive projects.
I designed scaffolded assessment and feedback strategies to support learners progressively as they build their knowledge and skills. These strategies provide structure, guidance, and incremental challenges, allowing learners to achieve mastery through a series of increasingly complex tasks. This approach not only enhances learning outcomes, but also fosters a deeper understanding and application of the course material.
I included detailed rubrics for all assessments to guide learners on expectations and how to achieve success. Rubrics offer transparent and consistent guidelines for evaluating performance. They help learners understand what is expected and how to meet those expectations, reducing ambiguity and improving the quality of their work.
